Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions people ask most before their first call. If yours isn't here, ask us directly during your free consultation — there's no charge for a straight answer.
These are general answers, not guidance for your specific situation. Costs, timelines, and outcomes vary based on your circumstances, and no firm can guarantee a specific result before reviewing your case. For answers about your situation, the free consultation is the place to start.
What does Alliance Tax Defense do?
We help people who owe the IRS understand their options and work toward a resolution. That can mean negotiating with the IRS on your behalf, filing missing returns, requesting penalty relief, setting up a payment plan, or pursuing other programs — whatever fits your situation.
Who do you work with?
Taxpayers dealing with IRS or state tax debt, notices, wage garnishments, bank levies, or unfiled returns. Every case is different, and the free consultation is where we figure out whether and how we can help with yours.
Do I need to owe a minimum amount?
Generally, we work with taxpayers who owe $10,000 or more. If you're not sure where you fall, the free consultation is the fastest way to find out — there's no cost and no obligation.
What happens during the free consultation?
You tell us what's going on — the notices you've received, the calls you're getting, what you're worried about — and we explain, in plain language, what your options might look like. It's a conversation, not a sales pitch, and there's no obligation to move forward.
What is the Tax Investigation Phase?
It's the first phase of working with us, and it happens before any resolution work begins. We obtain your IRS transcripts, review your filing and collection history, and analyze your financial situation. At the end, you get a written resolution plan you can read and keep.
What happens after the Tax Investigation Phase?
If you decide to move forward, we enter a separate Resolution Phase — representing you, filing what's needed, and working the strategy laid out in your plan. You're never required to continue past the Tax Investigation Phase; that decision is yours.
Can you guarantee that my tax debt will be reduced?
No. No firm can honestly guarantee a specific reduction, outcome, or timeline before reviewing your case, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. What we can offer is a straightforward look at your options and honest answers at every step.
Do penalties and interest stop while my case is being worked?
No. Penalties and interest continue to accrue on your balance until it's fully resolved, even while we're working your case. Some resolution options can stop new collection actions like levies, but nothing stops the meter on what you owe.
Can you help with unfiled tax returns?
Yes. Getting current on filing is often the first step toward any IRS relief program, and we can help reconstruct and file missing years, even if you no longer have your original records.
Can you help with wage garnishments or bank levies?
Yes. Both come with their own timelines, and the sooner you call, the more options are usually available. We review the notice, confirm where things stand, and work toward a release.
How long does tax resolution take?
It depends on the program, your situation, and current IRS processing times. Some steps, like setting up a payment plan, can move relatively quickly. Others take considerably longer. We'll give you a realistic sense of timing for your situation rather than a number designed to sound good.
Will I have to speak with the IRS myself?
Once you sign a power of attorney, we're authorized to speak with the IRS on your behalf, so most calls and letters come to us instead of you.
Is Alliance Tax Defense a law firm?
No. We're not a law firm, and we don't provide legal, accounting, or bankruptcy services. If your situation calls for legal representation, we'll tell you directly and point you toward the right kind of help.
Do you serve clients outside California?
Yes. We're based in California and serve clients nationwide, though services may not be available in every state.
What does it cost?
The consultation is free. If you move forward, the Tax Investigation Phase — transcript retrieval, financial analysis, and a written resolution plan — is quoted in writing before you enroll. Because that work begins immediately, it's non-refundable once started, though we refund it in full if we can't complete it for reasons on our end. Resolution work is quoted separately after you've seen the plan. We don't post pricing here because it depends on your situation.
